Buy me a drink ?

One night I was talking to this girl at a bar that I THOUGHT at the time was a really cool girl in the midst of her master’s program. Little did I know her mentallity was set back to the 1950s when it comes to social norms. She argued that she won't even talk to a guy in this establishment unless "he buys her a drink". We disagreed

My opinion on the matter is simple. I don't buy drinks for girls at the bar. Hey I'm never saying I haven't, before, there was once a point where I was naive and young, like fresh off the press of an episode of Dawsons Creek. Now before you ladies start throwing your post modern feminization books at me let me give my reasoning

For starters I don't see the logic. I just came up and approached you, I made you laugh, I grabbed your ass, I listened to what you had to say, and the reward in the end is I BUY YOU A DRINK?? Stop the press, didn't I  just do all the work here. If anything she should be buying me a drink.I can hear the cries now, "Wally you’re cheap! you don't know how to treat a girl" Actually I'm quite the opposite.

As a general rule I try and treat women much like my friends, like pure gold. If it’s a girl I just met, we aren't friends yet. The best gifts are those which are unexpected. The “buy me a drink rule” speaks volumes to what this girl’s personality is all about. Men hate gold diggers. We as a society need to get off this notion that sex + currency makes the world go round. I don't believe there should be rules in place saying guy must buy girl a drink to impress her. When I see a guy at the bar buying girls drinks, they just look desperate and pathetic. Pumping bar equity into these girls for who all we know have boyfriends. What happened to making a girl laugh and having a good personality as the secret code to getting a girl between the sheets?

So with this said, I'm curious to those reading, should guys be required to buy girls drinks at the bar? Is this standard or have we come away from this ?
